The institution "Women from all countries"

The project Frauen aus allen Ländern was founded in the summer of 2002 by a group of both migrant and Austrian-born women.

The intention was to create a space for women – with or without migrant background – that could serve as a starting point for independent organization.

The current services offered by the project focus both on girls and women who have migrated and/or fled to Austria and women who were born in Austria. However, our events put a particular emphasis on the needs of migrant and refugee women.

One of the main objectives of Frauen aus allen Ländern is to facilitate integration through education, counseling and cultural events. By integration we understand the process of making it possible for migrants to become an accepted part of the society they have settled into without having to deny their respective cultural backgrounds. Integration is not a one-sided process but involves migrants and locals equally. Successful integration changes and enriches everyone.

Counseling

The counseling provided by Frauen aus allen Ländern is divided into the Counseling Café, individual counseling, the Girls Point and group counseling.

The Counseling Café
The Counseling Café serves as a meeting point and first contact opportunity, especially for girls and women who are migrants and/or refugees. The Café provides a space where their concerns and problems can be discussed, practical strategies suggested and possible further counseling arranged. Apart from providing counseling by a social worker, the Café creates a space in which girls and women from different backgrounds can meet. Women and girls who have experienced migration or flight can get to know each other, share their individual stories, discuss their current situations, exchange ideas, develop common agendas, receive information, create bonds and take advantage of the communication possibilities.
Often, the problems of women are interpreted as individual failure, even though they are usually the result of social conflict. Sharing one’s experiences with others can help to realize this and hence create the possibility to demand social change and strengthen independent women’s action. Frauen aus allen Ländern intends to be a space for migrant and Austrian-born women to address differences, but also to discover their commonalities!

Education

At the center of the educational program of Frauen aus allen Ländern are different-level German Language Courses, combined with free, professional child care. Different information events are integrated into the educational program.

German Language Courses

Structure:
* The provided courses consist of eight levels which successively lead to level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
* Each trimester, three courses with 40 units each will be offered.
* During course hours free and professional child care will be provided.

Aims:
* To show appreciation for the participants’ intention to learn German and encourage their efforts from the outset.
* A particular focus on specific teaching strategies and methods. The participants must understand that they themselves can direct – and accelerate – the way they are learning. The courses aim to strengthen skills that go beyond mere language acquisition.
* To provide an opportunity to meet with other women, learn about different life strategies and reflect on one’s own.
* To enable the participants upon completion of the course to partake actively and confidently in everyday life in Austria.

Contents:
* Vocabulary and grammar follow the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. All four aspects of language acquisition (speaking, reading, writing, and listening) will be developed.
* Situations and topics will reflect the everyday realities of the participants in order to enable them to negotiate these in German.
* At each course-level a main theme relevant for the participants’ everyday life will be explored both verbally and intellectually. A common presentation will conclude each course.

Methods:
* The courses will follow the ideas of communicative language teaching. The communicative situations will reflect the participants’ needs.
* To do different theories of teaching justice, a diversity of methods will be employed.
* Teaching focuses on the needs of the participants and encourages independent learning.
* In consideration of those participants who might not have much experience with academic learning, the process of language acquisition will be analyzed and reflected. Teaching methods and course structures will be adapted accordingly.
* The courses will adapt to the differences in qualifications and skills of the individual participants.
